A Push Present – For a New Mum

A Push Present – What is it?

A new baby in the family is celebrated throughout the world regardless to religion, culture or race. In some cultures tradition dictates a new mum gets a gift in others the mum gets a gift for every child she has. This is where the name Push Present comes from.

Push present is usually given to the mum by her husband as a way of showing his appreciation to the wife. The reason for that is that a women’s role during pregnancy and birth is very demanding. This is a time when women often find strength they were not aware they had within themselves. Diamonds are extremely hard yet very beautiful, just as a mother for a new baby is, and this is why diamond jewellery is usually the chosen gift for a push present.

What can you choose for a push present?

Diamond Ring

Most women at this stage of the relationship have already has an engagement ring and a wedding ring. This is the time to spoil your wife with a dress ring she will be happy to wear and show her friends.

If you are not married and not planning to get married it doesn’t mean the new mum cannot have a lifestyle ring as a push present. It is not hinting towards marriage or engagement however, it is a nice gift to receive.

Some women suffer from water retention after the pregnancy and the fingers may be a little swollen than they usually are so you might want to do your research regarding the ring size at the beginning of the pregnancy.

Diamond Pendant

Pendants are great as a push present as you cannot go wrong with size and the mum will be able to wear it immediately after receiving the gift. You can choose for a symbolic pendant that express your felling to her like a heart pendant.

If your partner already has a halo diamond ring match the pendant with a halo pendant for the push present.

If the budget doesn’t allow the full on diamond pendant mix it up with a gem stone and you will get an affordable and pretty diamond jewellery.

Diamond Earrings

I would normally recommend to buy stud diamond earring as a push present as babies, when starting growing a little and get curious, will find the sparkly diamond earring that are dangling from mummy’s ears the most exciting things to pull. This can be quite painful for the mum. If you want your partner to wear her push present, and I don’t mean when the baby starting school, then stud earrings should be your choice.

At H&D Diamonds you can find lots of diamond jewellery to choose from and make a new mum happy. Whether it is a lifestyle ring, a dress ring, a pendant, an earring or bracelets you are sure to find a diamond jewellery for your partner.

Asking for her hand in marriage

asking for her hand in marriage – a  guide

Before discussing what is the best way of asking for her hand in marriage, a natural question is should you?  The tradition of running the idea past her father is customary to this day, although some people consider it silly and even misogynistic.  A question is:  Will it make you look like a gentleman in her father’s eyes or will he be offended that you thought you actually had to ask him?

If you do ask, there is the risk of him saying “no”, and many people mitigate that risk by asking for his ‘blessing’ rather than his ‘permission’ to marry his daughter  –  think Perchik in Fiddler on the roof.

You could call him to arrange a discussion, or pull him to one side during a family event, then tell him how much you love his daughter, express your desire to marry her, and your hope that he gives his blessing.  Once all that is done, share a drink with him to celebrate!

There are times when informing the bride’s father of your intentions to marry can be unwise.  If, for example, your bride has a turbulent relationship with her father, she may not appreciate you wanting to get his blessing.

Another example is if you are a more mature couple, you may find it odd to ask her aged father for his permission when he hasn’t any influence over his daughter’s life.

But, in most situations, asking the father of the bride’s blessing or permission will be seen as a sign of respect and bravery.  “What’s the worst that can happen?”

On the flip side of all of this, there is the bride intending to say “I do”, but unsure of how to tell her parents.  This is especially pertinent if the groom avoids asking the father first, of course.

Timing is everything.  Timing can make or break the wedding announcement for parents.   Timing includes waiting to see if one of the parents is ill or going through a stressful time, as you wouldn’t want to add more stress to his already full plate.

While you might want to formally surprise any one of the four parents, in practice, it shouldn’t be a total surprise.  This may require you tell some other people first, or to throw in a few hints ever so often.

Another increasingly common option is for both the groom and the bride-to-be to tell her parents together  –  at a restaurant, say.  Both fiancés should be prepared to answer any and all questions the parents ask.   However, going back to the first strategy, some men even prefer to ask the parents for permission to marry their daughter before popping the question, so as to avoid conflicts or disagreements later on down the road, and honor their future spouse’s family.

While all of the above might sound daunting to a man, in most cases telling the parents in person will cause them to flood you with kisses and hugs.  But if they’re not close by, a phone call could also work.

There is an added benefit to asking for permission from the parents.  Parents who are asked respectfully are more likely to be interested in being involved in the wedding process.

Whatever happens, your honest intentions should shine through.  Good luck!

Can I see the product before the purchase?

Can I see the product before the purchase with an online shop?

1 carat princess cut engagement ring

Quite a lot of my clients are familiar with the quality of jewellery I provide them with and are happy to point at an image of their choice and order an item suitable to their ring size. But, especially before Christmas, I was approached by new clients who didn’t know the services and quality provided well enough.

Some of the clients have heard about H&D Diamonds from friends, others found us on search engines and although the testimonials for the products and purchase experience is always extremely good and heart warming for us to read there is still a doubt.

Understanding that clients some-times would like to see a product before the purchase there are a few options where we can make that happen.

cache_240_240_BJP0022D 0.40CTS-18CT

When the jewellery is a piece existing on our website, or one we can source from our suppliers, they, just like us do not always have all the designs in stock. This means we can show an exact ring but it may be in the wrong finger size or it might be in white gold and you want it to be made in platinum. By doing so the client can get the feel of what the ring would look like in real life the same way he would in a High Street shop.

But if it is an online shop then how is it done?

The process is very similar to any other online purchase you make. You would never get a dress from a clothing shop in the post and pay for it only if you like it. The same with diamond jewellery. You pay for the item and I will post it to you with an option to return it if you don’t like the jewellery for any reason.

It is always advisable to make contact and have a telephone conversation first. This will ensure the right item was ordered and all the specifications are clear. There are occasions where, if you are living in the Manchester or Cheshire area, I will be able to meet with you to show the jewellery in person.

If the item you wish to purchase is a bespoke one, normally it is done due to the specifications of the diamond. This means the diamond will be certified and the grading of the diamond are as the laboratory specified. In this occasion, if you live in the Manchester or Cheshire area and still wish to see the loose diamond before the setting, the option is available.

When the jewellery is handmade bespoke by our Bond Street jeweller you will be given a choice of designs. The one you like the most is the one that will be produced especially for you. In this case you will not be able to see the final piece until it is done. However, 3D computer generated images will give an accurate look of the final jewellery.

3D Image to client specification

3D Image to client specification

I had many customers who chose a ring just by the image either on the website or once I emailed separately. In all occasions the reaction was the same; “the real jewellery is so much nicer than the image we saw…”

I hope this helps clarify the subject but if there are still areas you wish to discuss I am only a phone call away.

The Right Time To Propose

Is there a right time to propose?

I think it is very romantic to say, “I knew it from the first time I saw her/him that they were the right one,” but may-be this statement cannot stand on its own. I am not a marriage consultant but I have read a little about what can make marriage successful-one that will last over time.

halo engagement ring

three stone diamond ring

1 carat princess cut engagement ring

If I could pin-point the magic of making marriage successful, I would put it down to openness. To make sure this is the right time to propose you have to ask yourself if you’ve been open with your partner on subjects that are important to both of you.

So what do you need to think of?

The first thing you need to accept is that you are two different entities and proposing to her means you want to be together for the rest of your life, all being well. Your differences in personality and the way you were brought up should not be swepped under the carpet so that it won’t ruin the evening. It needs to be discussed and accepted by both sides. It can be a difference in faith, origin or even the way you approach situations.

Your finances are also an important issue to discuss. I don’t mean you should know all about the other side’s savings and incomes but you would like to know habits of spending. This is true for both sides so if one of you likes to go out a lot and the other thinks this is a waste of money it might be a cause for arguments that in time will reflect on your relationship. Also, you need to consider if you can afford sometime in the future to support both your wife and children, as she might need to take time off work.

Think about your goals in life. Is there a match between what you want to achieve in your professional and personal life with the goals of your partner? Is the path you are both walking going to create a solid road you can travel on safely together? If there isn’t a match, does your partner accept this and is she willing to live with your choices? Are you willing to live with hers?

What about your family and friends? Do they support you being a couple? Do they accept your relationship and take your chosen partner as one of their own? Although you think she is marrying you and not your parents, in the long run you want them to get along so family holidays or Christmas dinner will not end up as a disaster.

What are your hobbies? Do you have anything you both like doing? It is OK to have different activities for yourself but it is important to find also a mutual thing you both enjoy doing. It can only strengthen the relationship.

I recently heard a story which I think now is a good time to share with you as it has a good lesson for life.

The Burnt Cookies – A story

When I was a child, I remember my mother used to make cookies. One evening, I remember clearly she came back from work really tired, and when she put the cookies in the oven, she left them there a little too long so they were slightly burnt.

That night she served my father a plate of slightly burnt cookies next to his tea. I remember myself waiting to see if anyone had noticed. I thought my father didn’t notice as he smiled to my mum then looked at me and asked me how was school. I can’t remember what I said but I remember hearing my mother apologising for the burnt cookies and I will never forget his answer to her. He said, “My dear wife, I love slightly burnt cookies.”

At night when he put me to bed I asked him if he really liked burnt cookies. He put his arms around me and told me this: “Your mother had a long day at work and she is really very tired and besides… a slightly burnt cookie never hurt anyone! Life is full of imperfect things that people think should be perfect. I am not the best at everything and over the years I noticed your mother is learning to accept all my faults and chooses to pay attention to all my qualities. Finding the line that connects all our differences is one of the most important things in creating a growing healthy environment and a long term relationship.”

If now is the time you feel ready to propose and you need help with choosing the ring help is on the other side of the phone.

Choosing an Engagement Ring

Choosing an engagement ring – when to start?

If you are considering proposing marriage and think all you need to do is buy an engagement ring and propose you might be surprised on the purchase day.

1 carat princess cut engagement ring

The engagement ring is the ring that not only will represent your love to your partner but will also be on her finger for many years to come. Choosing an engagement ring she will be happy with and you will be proud of should not be taken lightly. After all there is an expense involved and you don’t want to have any regrets about it.

Choosing an engagement ring is not just the act of browsing and seeing what is a nice ring in your eyes, or hers in many cases. Choosing an engagement ring is a process, just like your relationship, that involves getting to know not only the likes and dislikes you or your partner have, but also knowing a little more about the product you are buying, usually a diamond.

I have written in the past a lot about the different steps that need to be taken when choosing an engagement ring. The first thing I strongly recommend is to familiarise yourself with the world of diamonds. Just like when you go to buy a new television or any other new electronic device. So it is with a diamond; you must research. If you are already familiar with electronics or mobile phones you may only need to compare between models; in diamonds you might have to teach yourself first what is it you are buying. What makes one diamond better than the other? Why is one diamond more expensive than another even if they weigh the same? You can start by reading this useful and clear outline.

Assuming you have read the diamond guide you then need to think about the style of ring. Choosing an engagement ring in the right style for your loved one is not easy, even if she gets involved. I have seen couples who had done some research, coming to me with what they thought was a clear idea of what they wanted, and then changed their original plan altogether.

It is like anything else in life that is a high-value purchase and for the long term. You might not think as much when you plan your holiday, even though you might spend the same amount on it, as a holiday is an experience that will last for a couple of weeks. The ring will stay on the finger as a symbol and that can be a positive reminder that will sparkle with beauty or one that you’d wished you took more time to look into.

So, when do you need to start the process of choosing an engagement ring? It is very individual but in all honesty I would advise you to take your time. Like any important expenditure you will need time to process all the information you are gathering. Have a look at http://bit.ly/BlogAboutDiamondJewellery as you will find lots of helpful information that will aid you in the process of choosing an engagement ring, and one you will be proud of.

Engagement rings style

Most popular engagement rings style

It takes more than love to go for the next step and propose to the woman who makes you a whole person. I had the pleasure of meeting men who wanted to pop the question and were looking for the right ring. They all knew the girl was the right one for them but they were not sure which ring is the right one for her or their budget.

The engagement ring styles below could fit any budget or taste:

1) Round Solitaire

Bespoke Handmade Diamond Ring

The classic engagement ring is a diamond solitaire, especially a round, brilliant diamond, set on a tapered band. It is elegant, graceful and will never be out of fashion. When set on platinum, a durable metal, the ring should keep its beauty for many years. White and yellow gold are beautiful metal as well and cheaper than the platinum. However, gold does wear off and is more likely to be damaged than platinum.

2) Princess cut

Princess Cut Diamond Solitaire

Second in popularity is the princess cut diamond ring. Shaped as square cut, the princess cut is a more modern style of the solitaire ring. As the top part of the diamond is flat it is important to opt for a diamond that is high in clarity.

3) Size over quality

Some brides prefer to have a big ‘rock’ regardless of the quality. When talking about quality you can learn about the 4C’s of a diamond here to get familiarised with the trade lingo. This will help you be knowledgeable when selecting the ring.

4) Three stone ring

three

A three stone ring represents the past, present and future of the couple together. By choosing this option, you could get better value for your money. The reason is the way diamonds are priced. The bigger the diamond, the higher the price. This means that one diamond that weighs 1 carat might be more expensive than three diamonds, two of 0.25 carat each and one of 0.50 carat, although in total the three diamonds will weigh 1 carat.

5) Bridal Set

Halo Diamond Ring with a Matching Band

Many brides-to-be get a beautiful and very different engagement ring that can turn finding a wedding band to suit into a frustrating challenge. Some rings are designed in such a way that having a wedding ring next to it is simply impossible. A bridal set is designed to fit together perfectly in a very complementary style.

Buying A Diamond Ring – Ageless

Buying a diamond ring –  and get the shopkeeper emotional

This picture of an 80 year old chinese man  buying a diamond ring to his wife has been circulating online since last WEEK.  People who saw it titled it as the ‘most romantic picture of the year’ and comments such as ‘this is true love’ were left.

Apparently, the couple visited the shop last Wednesday afternoon. The husband, seen with a green jacket in the picture below, told the shopkeeper he was in the process of buying a diamond ring to his wife and asked to see a ‘reasonably’ priced diamond ring. He was offered a ring that was reduced and after trying it on his wife’s finger the purchased was made.

The shop assistant said the man paid with a huge roll of small banknotes. He said he wanted to bring happiness to his wife’s life after a long and hard life they shared together.

There are a few things I felt we can take away from this story:

1) Buying a diamond ring is ageless.

2) If you want to make a woman happy, regardless to her age, buy her a diamond ring.

3) Love conquers all!

Unique Engagement Ring in Manchester

Creating a unique engagement ring in Manchester

When it comes to my client’s unique engagement ring a quote from Margaret Mitchell, Gone with the Wind‘s author, comes to mind: “That is the one unforgivable sin in any society. Be different and be damned!”

Unique Diamond Jewellery

And why shouldn’t you?

You are an individual with your own appearance, taste and preferences. One person may like Rubies, another may prefer a Sapphire or maybe an Emerald, and that is perfectly fine. White gold, though very fashionable in recent years, doesn’t complement all skin tones and a large statement ring may not suit every women.

Your engagement ring should match your personality and style. It should be created uniquely for you. Only then will it be admired by you whilst attracting the attention it deserves from others.

How can you create a unique engagement ring?

Recently, one of my clients approached me regarding an engagement ring. It was a second marriage and a solitaire was not the preferred option.

As with many modern couples, my client was involved with the selection process, being the one who will be wearing the ring. After visiting jewellery shops she came back with a clear vision of what she doesn’t like.

Rule 1: Know what you do not like

Browsing with a close friend, having several heart to heart chats and bouncing ideas back and forth helped my client get a clearer picture of what she does like.

A while back I wrote about women’s choice and my client was a true example of a new trend of designer using gemstones in combination with diamonds.

Rule 2: Have a general idea of what you like to achieve

(a good friend by your side is always a bonus)

Next was the decision of which gemstone to choose. After consultations which informed her of the qualities of various gems my client decided that an aquamarine will accompany her diamonds.

Rule 3: Take an expert advice to create your unique engagement ring.

Once the finger was measured it was only a short while before the ring was ready for the proposal.

Now, the ring is worn with pride, my client loves her ring and is delighted with the admiring comments made by other people.

Five Stone Diamond Ring

Would you change house because one tile is loose or the paint is peeling? I was recently approached by two clients who had some dramatic solutions to simple problems.

The setting

One client contacted me about a ring she had. She told me she had already lost one diamond and had to replace it. About a year ago another diamond has become loose and, worried about losing another stone; she hasn’t worn the ring since. My client was sure her platinum mount is faulty and called to enquire about resetting her diamonds in a new mount.

Oval Shaped Diamond Halo Ring

My answer:

Setting diamonds is an art and as in most professions some setters are better than others. It is important to know that most insurers demand you check the setting of your rings regularly to prevent loss. If the setting has become loose it doesn’t automatically mean that the mount is faulty but rather that the setting needs tightening.

It is advisable to check the setting not only for their grip over the stone but also to check that they have not worn out or broken.

My advice is to regularly check your ring settings and if you notice a problem get it mended.

The mount

A second client brought her ring to be mended. It was caught in a drawer, bent and partially broke. When I met her husband to return the ring he mentioned she doesn’t wear the wedding and engagement rings as they are too small. He wondered why she did not bring them to be mended at the same time. When I spoke to my client and mentioned her husband’s thoughts she said she didn’t really like her wedding and engagement rings as they looked cheap. I wanted to know what ‘cheap looking’ means and after some probing she said the rings, which used to be white, look yellow.

Diamond Ring

Diamond Ring

My Answer:

White gold is made of yellow gold and one or more white metals. The common metals used are nickel, palladium, platinum and manganese. These metals are added to lighten the yellow gold colour and increase strength and durability of the metal. On its own the combination of metals would have a grey, dull brown or pink colour. To get it to the bright shiny white we are familiar with as white gold, any combination will be rhodium coated.

When wearing the jewellery, this coating can rub off in time, getting it back to a yellowish grey look. A simple way to get the jewellery back to its white colour is to rhodium plate it again.

Would you like to design your own ring?

A diamond ring is not an everyday purchase and there is nothing wrong with being particular about this special acquisition.

You don’t have to be a jewellery designer in order to know your likes and dislikes. And this is already a great start to designing your own distinctive piece of jewellery.

I often meet discerning customers who, through extensive research, have selectively assembled several images of diamond rings . Each may reflect one aspect of their ideal ring – but not in its entirety. Every one of these customers wishes for a single diamond ring which would encompass all these unique qualities.

In many cases a ring can be found to meet all the requirements. However, there are times when the best option is to turn to a professional Bond Street jeweller for advice.

Let me share with you the story of a recent customer who opted for a bespoke diamond ring.

The journey began with a request for a Four Claws Emerald Cut Diamond Ring. I offered several design options however, after further research and many visits to jewellery shops my customer came back with a complete design swing. He decided to opt for a Round Brilliant Cut Diamond instead!

Purchasing the diamond was a journey in itself. My customer educated himself extensively regarding the most desirable qualities he sought in the ideal stone. He looked to me for guidance and valued my contributions which ensured that budget would in no way compromise quality.

Once the diamond was purchased we had to ensure that we obtained the exact mount he had in mind. That mount was created using the shank from one image and claws of another. My customer was very specific about his wishes, and this made the creation of the ring much easier for my jeweller. However, before the actual ring was produced I needed my customer’s approval on a 3D design showing what the ring will look like.

After the design was approved, or in my customer’s word: ‘I LOVE IT!’ my jeweller could start processing the work and the final ring is here for you to see.

Bazel setting diamond ring

Bezel setting – This was the earliest known setting used by jewellers. A bezel is a strip of metal which bent according to the shape and size of the diamond. This is soldered to the jewellery piece and the diamond is then inserted into the bezel. Using a burnishing tool, the metal is then pressed against the edge of the diamond to create a strip which keeps the diamond in place.

Channel setting diamond ring

Channel setting – is often used when setting small diamonds in eternity rings. The idea is that the small diamonds are lined girdle-to-girdle between two bars of metal, known as the channels. The metal is then hammered on the upper side of the channels to secure the diamonds.

The ring above is made of four different colours of diamonds. It is possible to find colourless diamonds that would match the ones that are set in this ring. However, to find an identical feint yellow, fancy yellow and vivid yellow colour diamonds is impossible. These four shades of diamonds turned the ring to a unique jewellery piece that cannot be replicate.

The Cupola ring was designed around the centre round diamond. Finding an exact 8.38 carat black diamond may take a few years. In the same way, the pear copula ring was designed around the pear shape black diamond at its centre.
